The Benefits of Seaweed

Seaweed is the common name for many species of marine plants and algae that grow in the ocean as well as in rivers and lakes. Seaweed draws an extraordinary wealth of mineral elements, vitamins and trace elements from the sea. The mineral content is so high in seaweeds it makes up to 80% of its dry matter.

As a natural ingredient used for centuries due to its healing properties, it is known to work wonders for your skin. Used in our Deep Sea Extract Moisturising Facial Sheet Mask, its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties are beneficial in the treatment of skin conditions and its balanced combination of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids and anti-oxidants have anti-aging properties which help to promote healthy, youthful skin.

Skin conditions: Seaweed contains a compound called phycosaccharide that is proven to show anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory actions. This compound reduces the swelling of acne or pimples. Seaweed can also reduce sebum or oil production and thus further prevent skin conditions. In addition, when applied to the skin, seaweed draws out excess fluid and waste products. The result is a healthier, glowing skin.

Exfoliation: The dermis is continually producing new skin cells which rise to the surface. Without exfoliation the old skin remains and the skin appears dry and rough and will also have a dull, tired-looking appearance. Seaweed is a natural exfoliant and, as such, effective in cleansing old, dead skin cells and other impurities from the surface of the skin. This leaves the skin feeling fresh and supple and also brightens the appearance.

Anti-aging: Free radicals are produced by the body upon exposure to such things as stress, cigarette smoke, alcohol and too much sun. They cause damage to the cells of the body and are a major cause of ageing and disease. Antioxidants prevent or delay this cell damage inflicted by free radicals and are essential for maintaining youthful, healthy skin. Seaweed is rich in powerful anti-oxidants, such as ascorbic acid and selenium, which protect your skin from the damaging effects of free radicals. Seaweed is a major ingredient of our Deep Sea Extract Moisturising Facial Sheet Mask.

Skin elasticity: Seaweed contains a large amount of Essential Fatty Acids, which are necessary to keep the lipid layer in skin elastic and glowing. If there is a deficiency of these essential fatty acids the skin can lose moisture and become hard and dry. Seaweed also improves the suppleness and the elasticity of the skin by stimulating the renewal of damaged skin cells.
